Matthew 11:28-30

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

A yoke is a heavy wooden harness that fits over the shoulders of an ox or oxen. It is attached to a piece of equipment the oxen are to pull. There are many heavy burdens one may be carrying in life… sins, demands placed by others, sickness, oppression, and the list continues. With the visual of the yoke, we realize that Jesus wants to carry those burdens for us. The ‘rest’ he promises is love, healing, and peace with God. Life is hard, but Jesus is there to carry those burdens with us, promising that he will never leave us or forsake us. The heaviness we feel, is never from Jesus, his burden is light.

Jesus, today we acknowledge the heaviness of life’s burdens. Thank you for the promise to carry these heavy loads for us and to give us rest. Today we put our complete trust in you and walk in your peace. Amen.
