That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said.
This was the first time Jesus appeared to all of his disciples after His death, burial, and resurrection. The disciples all doubted, denied, or betrayed Jesus, and now they are frightened, and probably even regretting their past association with Jesus. Their lives are being threatened by Jewish leaders because Jesus’ body is missing. They feared death because they didn’t follow Jewish law. Maybe you have a fear too, simply because you didn’t measure up to someone else’s high standards. Here’s where Jesus offers Good News: “Peace be with you!” Graciously, His first words weren’t, “I’m back! You should be afraid, very afraid!” Instead, “Peace!” Jesus instantly turns their fear into peace, and offers them grace over get-backs. Today, Jesus can instantly turn our fear into peace, because He is with us.
Jesus, your grace is so real in our lives. You give us chance after chance, grace after grace, and are so kind and loving towards us. Be with us in our darkest, most fearful moments, and give us more peace than we could ever imagine. Your joy is so good for us. I pray that we would constantly pursue more of you, and have more of your joy and peace in our lives. Amen
