I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.
Jesus definitely has loved us first, and here he seems to know that we would have a difficulty reciprocating that love. In his kindness, Jesus give us some helpful advice to love him in return. God gave Jesus some high commands, and Jesus delighted in doing them, without fail. He experienced God’s love. Jesus advises us that his commands are loving, and that when we simply obey his commands, we experience his love.
Jesus, tell us what you want us to do, where you want us to go, and who you want us to love. I pray we would let down our guard and lower our defenses to the things that make it so difficult to obey you. We let go of our desires, our pride, our comfort, and our own personal goals in order to follow you. As we obey you, I pray we experience you in new ways, fall more deeply in love with you, and that you would show us more of your love. Amen.
