“Then he said to them all: ‘If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?’”
Insight: Jim Elliot, a missionary who lost his life in 1956, said “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” Jesus teaches us that if we hang on to our life, refusing to surrender control of our plans and our will to Him, we will eventually lose it for all eternity. But if we surrender control and authority to Him, we will gain life in the most wonderful way - both in purpose on this earth and for eternity with Jesus in heaven. Being a follower and disciple of Jesus has never been about “having it all” as our world today would define it but rather about surrendering it all to gain what can never be lost or taken from us, even in death.
Prayer: Father, sometimes I hang on so tightly to what I want & what I feel is rightfully “mine.” Help me to pick up my cross and deny myself, knowing that as I lose myself in You, You will give me an abundant and eternal life that nothing on this earth could ever compare to. I don’t want to spend my one life striving to gain what I can never keep anyways - I want to spend my life with You and for You. Amen.
